Tree Planting Guidelines

Please refer to the graphic below when planting trees. Planning ahead and looking around the area where you want to plan, looking up to see what potenial hazards will be in the future once it matures.

Tree planting guide showing required distances from power lines: no trees allowed within 25 feet; small trees (under 25 feet tall or wide) planted at least 25 feet away; medium trees (25–40 feet tall or wide) planted at least 40 feet away; and large trees (over 40 feet tall or wide) planted at least 60 feet away.
Please follow these guidelines when considering where to plant trees.

Trees & Powerlines

With over 7,000 miles of overhead powerlines throughout our seven county service territory, vegetation management is key to maintaining reliable and safe electrical service. It’s a constant effort to maintain proper clearances when trimming trees around our powerlines. Southern Public Power District tries very hard to maintain at least 10 feet of clearance from each side of the powerline and at least 6 feet below the powerlines. We also try to take care of the trees and cut in a way that will do the least harm, trimming back to a main branch or trunk. Our crews will mulch and remove all small brush and debris and will leave firewood-sized logs for customers if requested. our goal is to leave everything looking as nice as possible when we complete and area.

Whether it’s one of our main lines or a service line to a house, tree branches pose a very real hazard. if there is any question, we suggest our customers call us first to come look at the tree before they start cutting. We are not responsible for tree branches near overhead lines that are customer owned or beyond the metering point. we will do what we can to help because safety of our customers is our top priority.
