DIY Safety: Power Tool Safety Tips

Tackling a DIY project around the house this weekend? Make sure “electrical safety” is included on your “to-do” list!

  • Use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) with every power tool to protect against electric shocks.
  • Do not use power tools with an extension cord that exceeds 100 feet in length.
  • Never use power tools near live electrical wires or water pipes.
  • Use extreme caution when cutting or drilling into walls where electrical wires or water pipes could be accidentally touched or penetrated.
  • If a power tool trips a safety device while in use, take the tool to a manufacturer-authorized repair center for service.
  • When working with electricity, use tools with insulated grips.
  • Appropriate personal protective gear should be worn when using power tools.
  • Do not use power tools without the proper guards.
  • When using a wet-dry vacuum cleaner or a pressure washer, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid electric shock.

Don’t Shock The Neighborhood

INFO SOURCE: Electrical Safety Foundation International

In the aftermath of a major storm, would you consider using a generator to maintain temporary power in your home? If so, the time to prepare for generator usage is NOW, not in the hours or days after a storm strikes.

Before you use a portable generator, you MUST enlist in the help of a qualified electrician to install a transfer switch. This will prevent a dangerous situation called “backfeeding”, which occurs when power is transferred from your generating unit back onto power lines. Should this situation occur, it would pose a lethal risk for our utility lineworkers working to restore power. Backfeeding can also cause damage to your appliances, electronics and other technology inside your home.

Contact your local, qualified electrician today and be ready to use a generator safely BEFORE a disaster strikes.

GENERLINK
Another option available to you to safely connect a generator is GenerLink, a program offered by Southern Power District. To learn more about GenerLink, contact Sam Reinke at 800-579-3019.
